Welcome to the one and only place on the Internet where you can get all the highs and lows from the world of politics in a scant few paragraphs. Remember, Winners and Losers isn’t about being a Republican, Democrat, or Independent. It isn’t even about being good or bad. It’s all about whether you were the dog or the fire hydrant this week.
Winners:
Outsiders – No matter what happens from here on in with the debt ceiling negotiations, those in the best position to exploit it in the 2012 elections will be those who were nowhere near this mess when it happened.
Atheists – The ACLU won their day in court. The Dixie County, FL Courthouse has 30 days to remove from their premises a granite 10 Commandments display that they don’t own. The long-besieged 10 Commandments, which provided the original foundation of the American legal system, are now officially unwelcome.
Losers:
Diplomatic Immunity – The British are in a snit over President Obama’s refusal to pay a “Congestion Charge” for hogging up the roads with his motorcade during his last visit. Obama is refusing to pay for the same reason that UN delegates refuse to pay the millions of dollars in parking fines that they owe New York City – diplomatic immunity. What’s good for the geese of the world is good for the US gander. If we have to pay today, there will be a lot of cranky diplomats at the UN tomorrow.
Rebekah Brooks – Deserved or not, she’s the sacrificial lamb in the News of the World hacking scandal. And, oh yeah, all the employees the News of the World, the vast majority of whom had nothing whatsoever to do with the hacking, didn’t fare so well this week either.
Small minded bureaucrats – This one comes with an “according to the lawsuit” caveat. Take it for what it’s worth, but assuming the information in Nevada resident and Sarah Palin enthusiast James Linlor’s lawsuit is accurate it’s a bad week to be a partisan bigot in the Nevada DMV.
According to the lawsuit, the DMV rejected GOPALIN, PALIN, PALIN12, PALIN16, REPBLCN, and BUSH because they were too political, but approved GOGREEN,DMOCRAT, AL GORE, KERRY, EDWARDS, DEAN, HILLARY, RONPAUL, and GO OBAMA. If the allegations are true – and as far as I know James Linlor hasn’t lied to me yet – that’s a disgrace and abuse of power (sad that so little a power as approving license plates can go to a person’s head) no matter what party you stand for. If the story turns out to be a bizarre fabrication, Linlor is bound for a future spot in the Loser column himself.
