The political uproar of the week was a furor over President Obama’s back to school speech to the kiddies. The President said he’d like to give a little talk to the kids as they start the school year. Turns out, some people from the right side of the aisle don’t trust the Wise and Exalted Ruler to deliver a peppy “stay in school” speech without attempting to brainwash our innocent little darlings into becoming socialist lapdogs of a tyrannical ruler. It also so happens that the people on the left side of the aisle don’t trust our educators to make a sensible decision as to what is and is not appropriate to show in the classroom. Maybe President Obama should appoint a “Reality Czar” to help keep the Washington insiders from blowing every little thing out of proportion.
For the 99.5% of you who missed it, the speech was bland in content and completely harmless. He told the kids that education is important. He tried to appear hip by making reference to Xbox. There was nothing objectionable in the whole thing.
The Right cried, “He was going to try to indoctrinate our children, but he changed the speech because we put pressure on him.” Yea for you. Don’t hurt your arms patting yourselves on the back.
The Left cried, “Schools refused to show the speech because they’re biased.” Seriously? Do you people have any idea how overwhelmingly liberal the educators in this country are? Have you considered that it wasn’t shown in a lot of schools because it was the first day of class, at noon no less, and the teachers had other things to worry about than managing a school-wide assembly?
The whole uproar was much ado about absolutely nothing. There was nothing wrong with the speech. There was nothing wrong with not showing the speech. There was nothing at all for anybody to get upset about, but that didn’t stop the uncompromising extremes from lighting up the blogosphere and creating a tempest in a teapot.
