Election fervor is picking up and the Republicans and Democrats are settling into their typical corners of the ring. Republicans repeatedly talk about how they are pro-family, by being pro-life and pro-heterosexual marriage. Democrats talk about how they are pro-family by being "for the children" (though I still haven’t figured out what this means) and working on healthy eating campaigns.
But having spent the last ten years traveling extensively, the one conclusion I have drawn is that neither political party in the US is particularly family-friendly. Let’s take a look around the globe at how families are treated.

Gay marriage? “Oh, it’s not a matter of behavior — it’s a matter of RIGHTS!” Abortion? “Oh, it’s not a matter of life — it’s a matter of women’s health!” Taxes? “Oh, it’s not about hurting or not hurting economic growth — it’s a matter of fairness!” Spending? “Oh, it’s not about the government wasting money doing things it’s not good at doing — it’s about helping people!”

What does it take to be a politician nowadays? What kind of person wants to get into politics? Is it simply a matter of wearing an off-black suit, with a pressed white button-up, and a cornflower-blue tie? Is it a matter of delivering a perfectly half-hearted smile while you debate some other monkey in an empty suit in order to maximize your profits from the corporations and make sure that your constituents don't realize just how badly they're getting screwed?

President Obama's campaign has rolled out on his biggest accomplishments in an ad. What's really sad about this ad is that it is not about the economy, a drop back down to $2-a-gallon gas, health care, jobs, unemployment or even leaving Afghanistan. You know -- the issues that people really care about and the things that affect their everyday lives a great deal. Nope, the biggest accomplishment being publicized centers on the death of Osama Bin Laden.

Before I kick off, I feel I must make a comment regarding the methods of a certain colleague. Look: going out of your way to emphasize (I swear) spelling errors in the argument of someone who’s challenging your argument (SIC! SIC! SIC!) … that seems to be a common tactic of internet message boards, which can be best translated as, “You’re an idiot, so I don’t have to even bother to take your argument seriously.” Of course, it has nothing to do with content. In a word, it’s “sic”. Really … can’t we discuss things like rational adults?
