There was an article on the front page of the Sunday New York Times that discusses John McCain modeling his political views after the progressive Republican Theodore Roosevelt (TR).
I have long being a fan of TR. I have read almost every biography of him and was even a member of the TR Association for many years.
At the same time, I also always have been a big fan of John McCain. I am a fan not because I agree with every one of his positions but because he is an independent thinker. Like TR, McCain does not just toe the party line. He often crosses over and blazes a path that is completely independent.
The far right wing of the Republican party is often made nervous by McCain. But what I want as our country’s next leader is someone who does not just follow the party’s line. I want a free, independent thinker.
Like TR, McCain will be a great president. Let’s hope the demagogues on both sides don’t mess that up.
