In the election of 2000 thousands of votes disappeared in Florida. Unfortunately we now know this isn’t the first time there have been dificulties with balloting machines or even the balloting process. Over the years there have been several cases, including the Kennedy and Reagan eras where voting machines failed to operate properly or there were cases of bribery and dishonesty involving several elections.
The questions are: Why is faulty machinery still used? Why do people that are open to bribes allowed to work within offices where votes are counted? Why is it that possible thousands if not millions of votes have been tampered with in countless elections but nothing has been done to prevent the next hanging chad situation? In many districts we still use write-in ballots or even outdated punch machines to count the votes of those we elect. Why is our balloting system still full of holes today?
The truth is I doubt even the people who run our election process have an answer, and most likely we will continue to say close enough with even our presidential elections. It kind of makes you wonder what your tax dollars are being spent on, doesn’t it? With obvious problems with the job market, economy, and our public schools, where do the tax dollars go? It is obvious they don’t go into improving the voting system for sure. One only can hope that we will one day fix the problem, but I don’t suggest being too hopeful.
