Election of 2008: A Choice of Roosevelts

Political Opinions, Presidential Election

Now that the memorable election of 2008 is over, it may be time to do a quick analysis.  Throughout the election, I spoke often about how McCain reminded me of a new TR (Theodore Roosevelt).  But as the election cycle wore on, I also saw that Obama had all of the feel and politics of FDR (Franklin Deleno Roosevelt).  Like FDR, Obama inherited a world that was in economic turbulence.  And like FDR, Obama thinks that government action will bring us out of the turbulence.  Lastly, Obama also has an amazing fervor from the people that believe in him.  It is not abundantly clear if that passion for him is due to a general hatred of the outgoing president (poor W), the youth and vigor of Obama, or an actual feeling that Obama is some kind of savior.  The answer probably lies in some combination of all of these factors (answers usually do).

When you look at the Roosevelt cousins, you realize that although one was a Republican and one was a Democrat, they were not completely philosophically diametric.  Both believed that action was the best strategy for a president.  In TR’s case, he just believed he was better than others at determining what was right and what the best course of action was.  FDR genuinely believed that government could solve the ills of the financial world.

My gut feeling is that Obama is more FDR than he would even want to admit.  I think his administration will be one of great increased federal government reach and control.

That is an interesting perspective. I fear the government has their hands into too much already.

However, in these times we need all the help we can get.

  2. David Leary says:

The people of America have been desperate for someone to put their belief in and get behind, provided that person will get behind them as well. Obama has given the his promise and the people are still open enough to extend their trust one last time. I hope he can live up to expectations, for our sake!
