Third-party Candidates in the 2012 Presidential Election

by James Maynard April 26th, 2012 | Independent Ideas, Independent Views, Presidential Election
Americans have not elected a president who was not affiliated with a major party since George Washington. However, Abraham Lincoln's Republican Party was only six years old in 1860, George Wallace garnered 13.5% in 1968, and Ross Perot peaked in 1992 with nearly 19% of the popular vote.

Will 2012 be a year where third-party candidates play a large role in the election?

Three parties may be fielding strong candidates this year. The Libertarian Party will likely be represented by a former Governor for the first time – New Mexico's Gary Johnson. The Greens may be fielding a celebrity, Rosanne Barr,

Shocker! Teen Pregnancy Drops Due to Contraception

by Jason Lightner April 20th, 2012 | Independent Ideas, Independent Views
How this is a surprise to anyone is beyond my comprehension.

From salon.com:

“The most recent decline in teen births can be linked almost exclusively to improvements in teens’ contraceptive use”

You don't say? Kids use a condom, or the pill, or both, and they don't get knocked up? Brilliant! Seriously, call Guinness! Wait, what? There's another possibility?

Janice Crouse of Concerned Women for America:

“They don’t even mention the fact there’s been a tremendous increase in effectiveness and pervasiveness of abstinence education."

Andrew Breitbart passed away this week at the too-young age of 43. Although I wasn't always the biggest fan of his uber-confrontational style, he was a young guy and his children are now fatherless. In the silver lining department, Breitbart's death has generated the latest, greatest round of conspiracy theories, which I do so enjoy. So let's follow this one through. Bear with me as we walk through this theory from the beginning.

The theory goes: President Obama was born in Kenya.

Words with Friends

by Ronald A. Rowe December 14th, 2011 | Independent Views, Political Opinions, Winners & Losers
With the exception of Alec Baldwin in the Loser Column, I’m honestly surprised by who made the lists this week. Such are the vagaries of the political world that I would not have seen any of these coming a month ago. Drop a note in the comments below if you’d like to nominate a candidate for next week’s Winners and Losers.

WINNERS:
Ron Paul –
As the various Republican contenders fall by the wayside for sundry reasons, Ron Paul looks less like a fringe kook and more like a legitimate option. He placed third in the latest Iowa poll, just one

Constructive vs. Destructive

by Jason Lightner December 2nd, 2011 | Independent Ideas, Independent Views, Political Opinions
Some time ago, famed innovator Steve Jobs was talking to media mogul Rupert Murdoch and said to him the following:

"You’re blowing it with Fox News. The axis today is not liberal and conservative, the axis is constructive-destructive, and you’ve cast your lot with the destructive people. Fox has become an incredibly destructive force in our society. You can be better, and this is going to be your legacy if you’re not careful."

This struck a chord with me as a person who watched Fox News when I was younger, from about 1998 on up to 2004 when I
