Eman al-Obeidy: Bravery Against Ruthless Barbarians

by Jason Lightner March 29th, 2011 Independent Ideas, World Politics
Do not forget the name: Eman al-Obeidy. As of this writing, this woman is probably dead and her body will likely never be found.

Her story is one of horror, and one of self-sacrifice. As reported by various news outlets like Al Jazeera, The New York Times and CNN, Eman al-Obeidy burst into the restaurant of the Rixos Hotel in Tripoli on Saturday, March 26th screaming and crying to reporters that she had been beaten and raped by Ghaddafi's militia while in captivity. She showed scars and bruises from her ordeal and showed marks on her wrists where she

Atlas Shrugged Part 1

by Ronald A. Rowe March 25th, 2011 Political Opinions
Have you ever read Atlas Shrugged?

Disclaimer: I’m not one of those Ayn Rand worshippers who thinks that Atlas Shrugged was the greatest book ever written. I am not an objectivist. I read and enjoyed it, but it did not change my life in any meaningful way.

For those unfamiliar with Ayn Rand’s masterwork, Atlas Shrugged is a sort of cautionary tale of progressivism gone wild. The astounding thing about it is that if you didn’t know better, you would swear that the book was written as a repudiation of President Obama and his quasi-socialist policies. Ironic that “progressive” has recently

Brief Thoughts on Recent World Events

by Jason Lightner March 22nd, 2011 Independent Ideas, World Politics
The crisis in Japan is unlike any single event witnessed in modern history. The country was shaken by the largest earthquake Japan has experienced in recorded history, it was then trounced by 30-foot tsunami waves and as if that weren't enough, they're now dealing with a nuclear problem in several of their reactors. The death toll has been pegged at 8,450 and rising. Worldwide humanitarian reaction has been great, with several countries providing a large amount of aid. Unfortunately, there are still many who believe that we shouldn't be sending aid to Japan when we "have problems at

Cri-Japan-itunity

by Ronald A. Rowe March 18th, 2011 General Politics, Political Opinions, Political Polls
Japan is busy dealing with the aftermath of a devastating 1-2-3 punch of Earthquake, Tsunami, Nuclear Meltdown (maybe). It didn’t take long before the clarion call started in the U.S., fanned by the media in search of an angle, “Could the same thing happen here?”

It is, of course, a ridiculous question. Could a massive natural disaster strike the US? It’s possible. Could a natural occurrence of epic proportions conceivably damage a US nuclear reactor thereby causing a radiation leak of one degree or another? I’m sure it could. Do we have any reactors in areas prone to massive earthquakes

Enough is Enough: Impeach Obama

by Jason Lightner March 15th, 2011 Independent Ideas, Political Facts, Political Opinions
It amazes me how we, as a people, let our politicians run roughshod over our rights. We hear them make promises while on the campaign trail and sit back and do nothing about it when they break those promises. The latest and most appalling instance of this is President Barack Obama, who on March 7 signed an executive order that created an indefinite detention system for prisoners at the Guantamo Bay military prison in Cuba. Not only is this a complete slap in the face to those who voted for him with the hopes that he would close
