CPAC Straw Poll

by Ronald A. Rowe February 25th, 2011 Political Opinions, Presidential Election
It took me a while to realize that Ron Paul isn’t nuts.  It was half way through the 2008 primaries that I finally understood that Paul is OK – it’s just his most ardent supporters that are stark raving mad.  So it is that Paul won the Conservative Political Action Conference Presidential Straw Poll for the second time in a row.  All that means is that Paulites can rig a live poll just as well as they do the online polls.

If we throw out the Paul victory, that leaves Mitt Romney as the realistic frontrunner based on the CPAC

Man Spends Money, Gets Locked Up for His Trouble

by Jason Lightner February 22nd, 2011 Independent Ideas, Political Opinions
So I'm browsing my favorite social news website, Reddit, when I come across an article from 2005 that looks vaguely familiar. Then it hits me -- this is from the Baltimore Sun! And it's an article about the Best Buy (on York Rd. in Timonium, MD) that I used to work at many years ago and how they had a man arrested for no reason whatsoever. Egypt is a free nation. Sort of. On its way, really.

The story of Egypt’s bloodless revolt just keeps getting stranger. As a quick recap - Hosni Mubarak ran the country as a benevolent dictatorship for the past three decades. Quite suddenly, the ‘benevolent’ was dropped from his title and the people of Egypt said “enough” with one voice. Mubarak agreed to step down as soon as orderly elections could be arranged, to which the people of Egypt answered with one voice “not good enough, old man.” Now Mubarak has retired to a resort on the Red Sea to live

Mubarak Resigns: Now What?

by Jason Lightner February 15th, 2011 Independent Ideas, Political Facts, Political Opinions, World Politics
On February 11th, 2011, former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak resigned his position amid unending protests by the people of Egypt for their government's corruption and oppression. This came just days after Mubarak refused to resign, stating that he would remain in power until at least the upcoming elections. The people of Egypt gathered in the streets to celebrate their victory as they finally achieved their goal. Through all this, however, one question remains:

Now what?

After 30+ years of being ruled under a dictatorship with the same guy calling the shots, what is Egypt to do? For now, at least, the

Idealism vs Pragmatism

by Ronald A. Rowe February 8th, 2011 World Politics
Have you ever wondered whether you are a pragmatist or an idealist? It isn’t as easy an answer as most –isms. Liberals and Conservatives generally know who they are and where they stand. Optimists are self-identified and pessimists are the ones who answer “I don’t know.” But pragmatism and idealism are not as easily identified. There is no national party, no platform, no clearly agreed upon standard to judge.

But now the good people of Egypt have kindly given us a self-diagnostic tool that each American can use to find their place on the idealism-pragmatism scale. I’m assuming that every
